Transition from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented socialist economic system has led to drastic social and economic changes in China. Today, China is the second largest economy in the world according to GDP and the number one economy based on PPP. The rising economic wealth has however associated with some costs, notably in the distribution of wealth among its citizens and regions.
