Identify theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada. In 2015, Lethbridge ranked in the top forty for identify fraud amongst the 100 biggest Canadian cities and the top ten for fraud in general[1]. This is spooky stuff! Protect yourself from identity thieves by safely disposing of personal items such as:

• Bank statements
• Credit card bills
• Utility bills
• Pay stubs
• Tax documents
• Medical records
• Store receipts
• Electronic files (photos, passwords, personal communications, contact lists, etc.)

In support of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services is partnering with Lethbridge Mobile Shredding to offer free shredding of personal* documents, hard drive degaussing, and e-waste recycling on site. Students’ Union staff will be on hand to collect donations of cash and non-perishable food items for the campus food bank.

When: Monday, October 31, 2016 from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm

Where: Bus loading zone to the west side of the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness (map)

What:   Secure shredding of paper and non-paper personal items and e-waste collection

Cost:    Free. Donations or cash or non-perishable food items for the campus food bank are appreciated.

Details:

Please be sure to sort your materials as follows:

Paper shredding:

• Photos are okay
• Limit of six boxes per person
• Don’t worry about removing staples, paper clips, elastic bands, coil bindings, or binder clips
• Remove all binders, plastic sleeves, hanging file folders, garbage, etc.  

Non-paper shredding:

• Any data storage device (hard drives, USB keys, CDs, DVDs, SIM cards, SD cards, floppy disks, cell phones and PDAs (batteries must be removed), etc.)
• Non-paper personal documents (film negatives, credit cards, ID cards, etc.)
• Hard drives will be degaussed on site and other non-paper materials will be taken by Lethbridge Mobile Shredding for secure destruction at their office.

E-Waste:

• Check out this list of electronics that are acceptable for recycling
• Electronic waste will be collected and sent off for recycling
