A Necessary Fiction: My Conversation with Nicholas de Grandmaison

September 17 – October 29, 2015
Main Gallery

Curated by Josephine Mills

Senior artist Jeff Thomas continues his celebrated practice of creating a “necessary fiction” with important public archives and collections. For this exhibition, he will create new work connected to the U of L’s outstanding holding of pastels by Nicholas de Grandmaison as well as the University’s extensive archives on the artist and his First Nations subjects. Thomas describes himself as an “urban Iroquois” and has been a significant contributor to the public conversation about historical and contemporary Aboriginal representation through his photographs, texts, and community engagement activities.
