This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

Lael Johnston (percussion), and Sean Warkentine (electric guitar and live electronics) join D. Andrew Stewart (karlax) in creating an electroacoustic adaptation of Erik Griswold’s Spill– a composition that touches the areas of sound art, performance art and music. Come celebrate a meditative live electronic ritual as grains of ‘time’ are spilled across the floor.

D. Andrew Stewart is a composer, pianist, music theorist and digital musical instrumentalist. Since 2000, he has been pursuing a career in live electronics and gesture-controlled performance, after developing his own sensor-suit while living in Paris. Following postdoctoral research at Concordia University (Montreal), Stewart moved to Lethbridge, where he currently teaches music and digital audio arts at the University of Lethbridge. His practice centres around two areas: combining acoustic instrument and digital instrument composition and establishing performance practises for digital instruments. Andrew Stewart’s music has been featured in countries such as: The Netherlands, The United States, Germany, France, Mexico, Norway, Austria, Italy, Korea Republic and his home country of Canada. His music has also been played by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Penderecki Quartet, Canadian Composers’ Orchestra, Toronto New Music Concerts, L’Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, Bradyworks, musikFabrik, orkest de ereprijs, het Malle Symen Quartet, Ensamble 3 and ROSA Ensemble, and L'Orchestre National d'Harmonie des Jeunes (France). Stewart has also contributed to the field of music technology through his demonstrations at the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), International Computer Music Conference / International Computer Music Association (ICMC/ICMA), Electroacoustic Music Studies Network, Electronic Music Foundation, ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, Society for Music Theory, and the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition.

Lael Johnston is a percussionist, conductor and educator. After completing a Masters of Music Performance from the University of Alberta, Lael spent several years touring North America with a variety of musical groups, covering a spectrum of musical styles. Returning to Calgary to pursue a career in Education, he has spent the past decade with Rocky View School Division as the Music Director at Chestermere High School.  His current program includes Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, New Music Ensemble and Drumline. These groups have received international recognition with numerous tours including The Harrogate Youth Festival in England and the Wurzburg Festival in Germany. Lael also continues to maintain a busy performance career as a freelance percussionist and conductor.

Sean Warkentine (An Ant and An Atom) was born and raised in Southern Manitoba. Sean has a diverse performance background that includes piano, voice, trumpet and bass guitar. At an early age, his involvement in several hardcore punk rock bands exposed his determination to find new and unusual approaches to music performance, resulting in unconventional electronic ambient post-rock sound compositions under the artist's moniker An Ant And An Atom. While living abroad, Sean's projects included the creation of an audio artwork for a gallery exhibition as well as composing music for short and feature length films. Presently, Sean is completing a music and digital audio arts degree at the University of Lethbridge. He is also the Music Director of CKXU 88.3 FM Community Radio, where he regularly directs radio productions, including audio documentaries, live performances, community events, creative recordings, and more.
