The Unconventional Trio: Music for Trumpet, Bass Trombone and Piano

Comprised of individually-accomplished performers, the “Unconventional Trio” was formed with the goal of performing compelling chamber music adapted for an uncommon instrumental combination.  This unique trio of Trumpet, Bass Trombone, and Piano will present several works that have been arranged and/or adapted by ensemble members Nick Sullivan and Josh Davies specifically for the “Unconventional Trio”.  The short program consists of music by Canadian, Dutch-German and American composers, most with connections or allusions to text and poetry.


Dr. Josh Davies -- Biography

Dr. Josh Davies is a Yamaha Performing Artist and two-time Grammy nominated performer who enjoys a diverse career as a versatile performer and educator. He has performed extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe, performing and holding positions with over 20 symphony orchestras. Since 2012, Josh has been a professor at the University of Lethbridge in Lethbridge, AB, Canada where he teaches studio trumpet, jazz history and is the director of the U of L Jazz Ensemble. Josh holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music degree from The University of Texas at Austin.

Nick Sullivan – Biography 

Beginning his musical education in Lethbridge, AB, Nick Sullivan received a fellowship to undertake graduate studies at the University of Victoria.  He returned to the west coast to pursue a DMA degree at the University of British Columbia. Currently, Nick is on faculty at the University of Lethbridge teaching the low brass studio, Musicianship Skills, and the History of Rock ‘n Roll. 

Active in searching for and commissioning new music, he is also interested in vocal works transcribed for low brass.  Nick performs recitals throughout Western Canada and appears with numerous orchestras.

Nick Sullivan is a performing artist for Michael Rath Trombones.

Dr. Deanna Oye -- Biography 

Pianist Deanna Oye is Associate Professor in the Department of Music, University of Lethbridge, where she teaches Studio Piano and developed the Collaborative Piano course series.  She holds a doctorate in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music and has given solo and collaborative performances throughout Canada, the U.S., Scotland, Germany and Japan, with broadcasts on CBC Radio Two and NPR.  As a member of the SoWeCa Chamber Music Festival, Deanna has shared the stage with violist Rivka Golani, Israeli flutist Noam Buchman, and members of the Calgary Philharmonic and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras.
