Experience Robert Schumann’s 1840 song cycle Dichterliebe ("poet's love") Opus 48, set with 16 of the original 20 poems of Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo of 1823.The cycle of 16 songs begins with the excitement of a young romance in spring, but unfortunately the object of our poet's affection chooses and marries another, leaving him feeling rejected and resentful. Heinrich Heine's text and Schumann's music explore the full range of this emotional journey, creating a unique musical drama in accompanied songs.

Paul Grindlay, bass-baritone
“I feel fortunate to have been blessed with a unique bass voice. Perhaps I can take credit for the “ten thousand hours” of practice and commitment spent getting to know my instrument, but mostly I am indebted to many amazing teachers, mentors, conductors and colleagues who have inspired and supported me on my musical journey, including my parents and grandparents, my wife, my brothers and so many others.” ~ Paul Grindlay, bass-baritone

Paul Grindlay, bass-baritone, has enjoyed a quarter century of professional performances on three continents with such groups as the Vienna Chamber Opera, Opera Atelier, Calgary Opera, American Bach Soloists, Carmel Bach Festival, Tafelmusik, Toronto Consort, Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montreal, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, VoiceScapes, Luminous Voices, Pro Coro Canada and many others. He has recorded CDs of music for NAXOS Records, Marquis and Toccata Classics.

Grindlay was Artistic Director of the Calgary Boys Choir from 2004 to 2019. He also directs the choir at Knox Presbyterian Church, Calgary, and is on the vocal faculty at Mount Royal Conservatory of Music.

When he’s not immersed in music, he most likely can be found with family and friends, fly-fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, swimming, cooking or writing poetry.
