U of L Orchestra pays Tribute to Long Time Director

An ‘All-Canadian’ U of L Wind Orchestra is juxtaposed with ‘All-American’ composers to create an exciting tribute to Dr. Thomas Staples, who is retiring this spring.  The concert Made in Canada takes place 8 pm on Tuesday, March 31 in the University Theatre.

“Audiences can expect an upbeat program including the epic Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli and American Overture for Band by Joseph Willcox Jenkins, with a surprise for Tom at the end,” says Dr. Chee Meng Low, Director, U of L Wind Orchestra.

“It’s really all about Tom Staples,” says Chee Meng. “He has been a long time professor of Music and Director of Bands here at University of Lethbridge. He has made numerous and significant contributions to the development and growth of the Music department and the surrounding music communities ”

In addition to regular performances as a horn soloist at the U of L, Staples soloed with several bands and orchestras in Western Canada, most recently with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, and at the Call of the Wild Horn Festival in Cold Lake, AB.  A keen advocate of music for brass ensembles, Staples has a lengthy background performing in brass groups including the U of L Faculty Brass, Commonwealth Brass, NewWest Brass, Southern Alberta Brass and Bridge Brass.  He has been principal horn with the Lethbridge Symphony for over two decades.

During his 25 year tenure at the University of Lethbridge, Thomas Staples was the Director of Bands for 14 years, conducting the Wind Orchestra, Chamber Band, and Brass and Woodwind Choirs. Under his baton, groups received high praise for expressive and stimulating performances. In recent years, the Wind Orchestra and Chamber Band have traveled throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Washington State. Staples is still in regular demand as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the area.
