From the Forest to the Stage

Hearing the Forest Through the Trees, is a thematic concert that will leave the audience longing for more. Slated for the Recital Hall Nov. 21 at 7:30 pm, the U of L singers, under the direction of Janet Youngdahl, will perform a series of pieces that speak to the identity of the forest and our relationships with the serenity of nature.

“This is going to be a marvellous concert,” exclaims Youngdahl.

Guest soloist, Glen Montgomery will premiere an original composition Cedar, Birch and Redwood, the inspiration for which came from a trip to the Steinway Factory in Vienna, where he and Deanna Oye were looking for a new piano for the Recital Hall. There he realized the pianos have roots beyond the factory – the forest.

When Youngdahl approached him earlier this fall about a concert with a forest theme, he was so inspired by this idea, Montgomery wrote his new piece with text to go along with it.

“When Glen came in the early fall and showed me the piece he had written, he explained [to me and the choir] how meaningful the piano was to him and how it connected with the idea of trees,” recalls Youngdahl.

Other pieces featured are Robert Schumann’s Waldszenen Opus 82, Stephen Chatman’s Trees, Jake Runestad’s The Peace of Wild Things, and a special presentation, Musings from the Cloud Forest by U of L faculty member, Matthew Letts.

The poetry and tranquility of Hearing the Forest Through the Trees makes it a concert not to be missed. Tickets can be purchased at the U of L Box Office: 403-329-2616 or ulethbridge.ca/tickets. Prices: $20 – Regular, $15 – Senior, $12 - Student.
