Dr. A. Andrew Stewart

Ritual for One: Notation for Karlax

In this lecture-demonstration, Andrew examines music notation strategies for the karlax, a digital musical instrument, highlighting his research/creative activities and concepts for karlax notation.

He illustrates how musical expression resides in the interpretation of a musical score and how a system of notation is crucial when the means of musical expression is extended and augmented by digital technology.

Note: Andrew also performs on the karlax at Music at Noon on Dec. 1, 2015 at 12:15 pm in the University Recital Hall.  Admission is free.

Peter Visentin

Musicians in Motion:  Biomechanics, Ergonomics, Motor Behavior and the Development of a Healthy Personal Performance Style

With occupational/vocational injury rates of 75% occurring among professional musicians, Peter’s research aims to understand and address the vocational dilemmas faced by performing artists from scientific, artistic, pedagogical, philosophical and practical perspectives.

He discusses his recent research, which uses methods from movement science to examine the “how” and “what” of left-hand position changes (shifting), a movement skill essential during violin performance. The results provide a model that wins science a meaningful pedagogical entré into the art of the performer.
