CAC Western Tour 2018 - Dr. Michael Fronda (McGill)

This event is from the archives of The Notice Board. The event has already taken place and the information contained in this post may no longer be relevant or accurate.

Join Dr. Michael Fronda (McGill) for his free lecture, 'Was Hannibal a military genius? Some Ancient and Modern Assessments', on Oct 24 from 5 to 6:30 PM in room C610 (UHall). Everyone is welcome.

Since antiquity, Hannibal Barca has generally been praised as one of history’s great generals.

Indeed, he is often considered one of military history’s great tragic figures, like Robert E. Lee or Erwin Rommel, a brilliant commander who had the misfortune of fighting for the wrong side, destined to lose because of factors beyond his control than his own shortcomings as a general.

Yet Hannibal has had his critics, too, with the most famous criticism that he knew how to win battles but did not understand how to win wars. This talk will present some noteworthy assessments of Hannibal’s generalship—both ancient and modern—and then attempt to evaluate Hannibal, focusing on tactics, strategy and military leadership.

Was he, in fact, a great general? If so, why?

Professor Fronda’s research centers on Pre-Roman and Roman Italy.
