The panel introduces and considers the research practices of three artists all of whom are presently enrolled as MFA candidates in Art. The discussion is followed by a performance by Migueltzinta Solis, installations of recent artworks by Tyler Muzzin and Nicole Riedmueller in the context of the Department of Art’s annual MFA Open Studios and Critique. 

MFA candidates Tyler Muzzin (2nd year, photo and time-based media, installation, sculpture), Nicole Riedmueller (1st year, clay) and Migueltzinta Solis (2nd year, performance, weaving, installation, video) open their studios, share current work and are present to respond to questions and comments. The Open Studios + Critique follows presentations by each artist that focus on the ideas and motivations that underlying and help provide context for each of their respective research practices. 

Everyone is welcome to attend both events.

Biographies

Tyler Muzzin received a BA in English Language & Literature at the University of Western Ontario in 2010 and went on to complete a BA in Studio Art at the University of Guelph in 2013. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of Lethbridge. Muzzin won the SAAG Writing Prize in March 2018, and was awarded a Gushul Studio residency in the Crowsnest Pass for the month of June 2018. A recent video installation titled Chorus, produced at the University of Lethbridge, was featured in THIRD SHIFT Festival of Public Contemporary Art in Saint John, New Brunswick in August 2018. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Germany and Greece.

Nicole Riedmueller is an artist working primarily in clay. She creates wheel thrown and altered vessels as well as hand built forms. She gains pleasure from the processes involved in producing her ceramic work. She believes that the use of handmade objects humanizes and elevates our daily experiences. She currently lives in Lethbridge, Alberta with her husband and three children.

Migueltzinta Solis was raised in California and Mexico. He works in a broad range of mediums including installation, performance, textile and video. He engages questions of belonging and un-belonging to place, boundaries between animal, human and object, and queer, colonial and rural imaginaries. He is trans.
