“Colonial photographic archives & historical literacy in a Canadian context”

Dr. Carol Williams is a Professor in the Department of Women & Gender Studies and the Department of History and the current Director (2017-2020) of the Centre of Oral History and Tradition—at the University of Lethbridge.

Williams’ research specialties are North American Women’s History inclusive of indigenous women’s histories; the histories of photography; and histories of reproductive rights and justice.  In June 2017, along with collaborators Faye Heavy Shield, Linda Weasel Head, and Hali Heavy Shield, Williams is beginning a SSHRC-funded project, Kainai Women’s Activism in Treaty 7 Territory 1969 to 1990 (2017-2020). 

Williams is an international consultant and contributor on an initiative headed by Dr. Sigrid Lien and Hilde Nielssen Negotiating History: Photography in Sami Culture and the Indigenous photographic Studies project funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
