PAST/FORWARD begins under the premise that the means and methods of how we build or ‘make’ architecture, and by extension the city, no longer resides within the prevue of the architect but rather the developer, the contractor and the politician. The lingering effect is a system in which architects are influenced more by contractors and building systems than the other way around, relinquishing influence, relevance, expertise, risk and profit. This has dire consequences for the way we envision and ultimately construct the city.

Dustin Couzens is an honours graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Calgary in 2004 and recipient of the AAA award for best thesis. After graduation, Dustin worked in Vienna for Coop Himmelblau and various other architectural offices in both Vancouver and Calgary prior to co-founding Modern Office of Design + Architecture in 2013. The work of Modern Office has been published in numerous magazines and has been recognized with a P/A Award, a World Architecture Festival Award, an Architizer A+ Award and a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. Dustin is also involved with the School of Architecture, Landscape and Planning at the University of Calgary, in the capacity of both a critic and a sessional instructor.
