On Change

SPECTACLE is an internationally-oriented architecture office working across the fields of building, urbanism, landscape, and object design. The office seeks opportunities to create works of architecture that examine and influence our cities and the way we live. Founding Partner Philip Vandermey will give an overview on the office’s approach, present several projects from the past five years, and explore the way that radical changes in the world influence our work.

Philip Vandermey is a Dutch Canadian architect, urbanist and designer, and one of the founding partners of SPECTACLE Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism. He has contributed to work published in Architect, Canadian Architect, Mark, and MONU Magazines, and has been awarded with two Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence, a Progressive Architecture Award, and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal. In 2017, the Tigers Retrofit project was awarded a 2017 Best of Canada Award. He has worked on a wide range of project types around the world, including museums, train stations, towers, housing, offices, schools, public spaces, houses, and libraries. He teaches part-time at the University of Calgary as a sessional instructor, is a LEED Accredited Professional, and was a volunteer on the City of Calgary Urban Design Review Panel from 2015 to 2018. Philip has worked with notable architecture firms in Calgary, Montreal, Barcelona, and Rotterdam, where, prior to co-founding SPECTACLE, he was a Project Architect at Barcode Architects.
