Calgary's urban fabric has seen a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Throughout the 1980's and '90's, there was generally not a strong connection between Calgary and global centres of architectural innovation. Most buildings adhered to financial rather than design imperatives, resulting in a somewhat monotonous skyline. Recently, as Calgary's culture has become more diverse and cosmopolitan overall, a series of major building projects have forged a new direction, creating a vital link with leading international design practice and theory. This talk will examine a number of key projects in this development, including The Bow, Telus Sky, the new Calgary Public Library, Jamieson Place, and the Core shopping centre.
