Spatially Aligned, Spatially Allied: Textiles and the Built Environment

Nineteenth-century German architect and historian Gottfried Semper theorized that all architectural form is derived from the combination of four technical arts, materials and socio-cultural imperatives. This lecture will begin with his ideas about the four elements of architecture in order to consider possible opportunities for “alliance” between textiles and architectural design. Drawing examples from recent craft, interior design, and contemporary art, different kinds of interrelationships between fibre-based practices and buildings will be discussed, leading to an argument for craft to be situated within an expanded field of spatial practice.

Andrew Rabyniuk is a Lethbridge based artist whose work addresses the material and performative formulations of space. His specific research interests concentrate on the relationship between craft-identified media and the built environment. He holds degrees in environmental design from the University of Manitoba and textiles from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 2016 he completed an MA in Cultural Studies from Queen's University where his research into knots and knotting practices was supported by a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canadian Graduate Scholarship. He has exhibited art across Canada including the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, NS; Modern Fuel in Kingston, ON; Afterhours Projects in Toronto, ON. His upcoming exhibition, Beyond the Pale Blind will be presented in Calgary at Untitled Art Society`s Arts Common +15.
