Founded in 1965 by a group of feisty backpackers, outfitters, fishermen and women who were worried about changes on the landscape, the Alberta Wilderness Association is the oldest conservation group in Alberta dedicated to a network of protected areas. With a vision to defend Wild Alberta and although their roots are firmly in the southwest corner of Alberta, they work tirelessly throughout Alberta inspiring communities to care about wilderness and wildlife. AWA has been an untiring advocate for the protection and wise management of wild spaces and protected areas throughout Alberta, including thoughtful land use planning within Alberta’s public lands.
