AI and Us: Ethics in the Age of Big Data

Dr. Jackie Rice

The ethical issues surrounding Artificial Intelligence are frequently associated with humanoid robots, self-driving cars, and uploading our consciousness to new, improved bodies. But AI is already with us—in the form of algorithmic systems that make vital decisions on activities such as medical referrals, insurance policies, and school admissions. Machine algorithms are often seen as entirely objective, but of course they are designed and implemented by human beings, and are vulnerable to human bias. In this presentation, Dr. Jackie Rice asks: how do we ensure that human-designed systems do not propagate existing biases?
