presents

“Oral Histories of GSA and QSA Participation in Alberta, Canada”

Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) are youth-led groups, typically in school settings, focused on creating safe spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) students and their allies. The GSA umbrella includes Queer Straight Alliances, Pride Clubs, Rainbow Alliances, and numerous other LGBTQ2S+ focused youth groups. Our project aims to collect and preserve the oral histories of people 18+ who have participated in a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), either in a school setting or in community-based format in Alberta, from 2000 to the present. In our talk, we will offer some preliminary results from our interviews and discuss some of the methodological challenges of conducting this research.
