Question 1

I lived in UHall residence; the first day I moved in was my first day in Lethbridge. I thought of how great it would be to have had guaranteed acceptance for first years to make it easy for students like me. That, and how the hallway in UHall is such a great meeting place.
My first impressions of the U of L was in a brochure I got in high school when I was looking for a university in Alberta to attend (I am from Ontario and wanted to go to school in AB). I fell in love with the beatiful campus and it's small size, and knew I had to go there. Seeing it in person after being accepted made me love it even more! A part of me is sad that it is growing so big since I found the small size and more intimate classroom setting very appealing, but I am very happy that the U of L is doing so well and can afford to grow.
U Hall is a nice building from the other side of the coulees, but there is a disconnect architecturally. The Neuroscience building looks like Costco. Where is the quad ? Why are their parking lots in front of the buildings ?
How do you get to the top of the hill from the E part of U Hall ? Beautiful, but strange.
When I first came for my job interview, I was struck by how impressive UHall looked - I'd been primed for that, the building is iconic of 1960s Canadian modernist dreams adn ambitionss. I think it's beautiful from outside. On the other hand, when I started to be shown around, I was disappointed by the quality of public spaces, which seemed to be cavernous and uninviting (the atrium, for example) or tucked away as an afterthought along the hallways of UHall. At the time of my interview, Markin, Turcotte, the Water Building and the new Phys Ed facility were not done - even so, I was struck by how long it took to get anywhere, given the small student population and the small number of buildings. Similarly, it seemed to me that, given the amazing location and views, there was little space that invited the outside in or vice versa (the library does a good job of bringing the outside in, I must admit). I'm a patio person, and the spaces that are outside seem cold (or loud - like the patio in front of UHall positioned next to the building's exhaust system) and uninviting.
When I arrived on campus for my interview I was struck by the beauty of the surroundings - the coulees are absolutely stunning. I thought UHall was a unique building from across the river but also find it almost depressing and impractical with its stairways and LONG hallway and am glad I don't have to go there often. And my first impression of Neuroscience was the same as Steven's - Costco was exactly how I described it. I also agree that we need a quad/green space centrally - a great example of a 'central' gathering space is the University of Saskatchewan's 'bowl'.
I really like the use of space in Markin Hall and the lighting that fills this building. It is a great addition to our campus.I agreee that an outdoor central gathering space would be a great idea and support the idea of a quad/green space. We have a beautiful waking space in the 100 tree wood, but it is not used as much as one would expect, perhaps because of it's location on campus.
The Erikson building is iconic and meets with the landscape so integrally and I agree with the first comment, the hallway of the Erikson building is conducive to social and academic interactions; I've worked in a Ron Thom designed universit...y and it generated isolation rather than interaction. access to the coulees is important as is some conservation rather than the consumption of the coulees with parking lots and tall buildings.

I was actually amazed by the vastness of the place. I know that there are other, bigger universities, but from my understanding they have buildings for each department and students generally stay in their specific departments. I like how this school uses all of its space for all of its students. (ie. just because I'm a Drama student doesn't mean I stay in the fine arts building) Just the overall scale of the school is awesome!
