  • Library Welcomes New Librarian, Nicole Eva

    We are very pleased to announce that Nicole Eva (University of Western Ontario MLIS 2008) has recently joined the University of Lethbridge Library on a tenure-track appointment. Nicole has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and worked in the field of advertising for several years in Saskatoon before returning to school to obtain her MLIS. She also spent two terms working at the Queen's University law library as a co-op student. Nicole's portfolio at the University of Lethbridge includes Management.

    Nicole enjoys hiking and walking with her dog, and is excited to be situated in southern Alberta with its proximity to the coulees and mountains. She also loves live music, good food, and of course, reading! She really enjoys working on the reference desk and teaching information literacy skills to students.

  • NEW: Self-book a Group Study Room

    The Library is conducting a pilot project to test student self-booking of eight group study rooms on Level 10.  Booking a group study room is only available to current UofL students and may only be booked for group study, not meetings or classes.

    To book a group study room, go to the Library homepage > Library catalogue > Search by Title or Subject "group study rooms" > click on Book an item and follow the instructions.  More information on booking is available on FAQs > Booking.

  • New Digitized Collection: Lethbridge Cenotaph Collection

    The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce access to a new digitized collection: Lethbridge Cenotaph Collection. The Lethbridge Cenotaph Project is a collection of biographies relating to the 262 soldiers from World War I who are remembered on the cenotaph in Lethbridge, Alberta. Compiled by Brett Clifton, the biographies document their personal lives, military service, and circumstances of death. Grave photos and personal photos are included whenever possible.

    You now have the option to self-book any of our multimedia equipment such as camcorders, projectors, laptop computers, digital cameras and more.

  • French, Japanese and Spanish language conversation groups in the Library

    Please join us in the library for informal conversation in French, Japanese and Spanish. An opportunity to practice and improve your language skills, these groups are open to all interested students, staff and faculty. Groups run for 30 - 40 minutes and will continue until the last day of classes, December 4th 2008. The groups are drop-in and meet in Group Study Room #9, located on the east end of level 10.     If you are a Grad student in chemistry, biochemistry or engaging in research which involves a particular chemical substance, you should know when and how best to search for articles, substance information and patent information using SciFinder Scholar. This session will provide a quick overview of this research tool, an understanding of its content and limitations, and practice in doing quick, comprehensive, and targeted searches.

  • New Medical Trial Database: Clin-eguide

    The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce access to a new database on trial in the area of Health Sciences: Clin-eguide.  This database contains information primarily for nurses and health practitioners. It includes drug identifier information, a visual guide to differential diagnosis, national guidelines, patient information sheets, and an expanding selection of evidenced-based nursing information. The “Nursing Advisor” tool provides quick reference content for nurses in the areas of drugs, diseases, diagnostic tests, treatments and signs and symptoms.  This trial is made available through our collaboration in Health Knowledge Network (HKN).

    Clin-eguide is on trial until November 15th, 2008 and is available via our Indexes/databases webpage.  Please provide feedback on this database to Health Sciences Librarian, Lorelei Harris, before November 10th, 2008.

    Note: BMJ Point of Care is also on trial until November 11, 2008. Database content is somewhat similar -- we encourage your opinions, feedback, and comments concerning both of these.

  • Current Library Display Highlights the Arctic

    Our current display, Northern Light, highlights life in the Arctic, covering topics such as history, health, art, literature,  hunting traditions, environmental issues, social issues and more.  Our display ties in with the current art display in the Helen Christou Gallery: The Arctic Landscape: Inuit prints from the UofL Art Collection.  Thanks so much to the UofL Art Gallery who loaned us several Inuit sculptures from the extensive University of Lethbridge Art Collection.  For more information, check out our Current Library Display webpage.

    This fall you must use your Bridge Bucks account to photocopy and print in the Library.  We have 4 machines where you can photocopy and pick up your print jobs: one on Level 9 north, two on Level 10 north near the Library exit and one on Level 11 at the Curriculum Lab entrance.  For more information on Bridge Bucks, check out Information Technology's webpage.  For details, please ask at any service desk in the Library.

  • New Databases: Canadian Financial Markets Research Centre (CFMRC) and Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP)

    The University Library is pleased to announce the addition of two new databases to our collection of electronic resources: Canadian Financial Markets Research Centre (CFMRC) and Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP). These are available through our participation in COPPUL (Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries) and in co-operation with the Faculty of Management.

    CFMRC includes: daily and monthly Toronto Stock Exchange trading information about specific securities; information on "price adjustments" such as dividends, stock splits, recapitalizations, etc.; information on daily and monthly index levels; as well as selected other financial markets information.

    CRSP provides access to NYSE/AMEX/Nasdaq Daily and Monthly Security Prices and other historical data related to over 25,000 companies.

    The University Library is pleased to announce the addition of a new database to our collection of electronic resources, Natural & Alternative Therapies (NAT).  This complementary and alternative medicine database is designed specifically for the consumer health researcher.  It contains evidence-based articles covering medical conditions, alternative therapies, herbs and supplements, functional foods, drug interactions, and homeopathy. The articles contained in the database are based on double-blind, placebo-controlled studies and other forms of meaningful scientific evidence.

    The University is pleased to announce the addition of the electronic resource Theatre in Video, made available through our participation in CRKN Digital Content Initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences. This resource contains more than 250 plays and more than 100 video documentaries available online in streaming video.   • New Resource: Nursing Reference Center (NRC)

    The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce the addition of Nursing Reference Center (NRC) to our collection of electronic resources. NRC allows researchers to access high quality, recent clinical evidence and knowledge on conditions and diseases, patient education, and drug and reference information from top publishers. As a point-of-care reference tool, this database provides access to thousands of full text documents, covering diseases and conditions, labs and diagnostics, as well as drug and reference information. It also features best practices guidelines, continuing education modules, and patient education information, including handouts.

  • New Database: Periodicals Archive Online (PAO) Collections 1-6

    Through our participation in the CRKN Humanities and Social Sciences Content Expansion, the University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Periodicals Archive Online (PAO) Collections 1-6.  Collections 1-6 of PAO provides full-text access to 500 international, scholarly journals (including more than 60 foreign-language titles) in the humanities and social sciences disciplines from 1802 to 1995 in thirty-seven key subject areas.

  • New Database: Classical Scores Library

    The University Library is proud to announce the addition of the Classical Scores Library to our collection of electronic resources, licensed through our participation in the CRKN Digital Content Initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Classical Scores Library contains 400,000 pages of classical music scores, manuscripts, and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 8,000 musical scores. Users can access multiple types of scores across various composers, genres, and time periods. It contains full scores, study scores, piano and vocal scores, as well as piano reductions. All opera, vocal, and choral texts are rekeyed to allow for deep searching and textual analysis.

  • New Resource: Bouquet Gnral

    Through participation in CRKN Digital Content Initiative for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the University Library is pleased to announce the addition of the Bouquet Général collection via Cairn to their collection of online resources.

    Cairn was formed in 1995 by four European publishing houses (Belin, De Boeck, La Découverte and Erès) and offers access to a comprehensive collection of French language periodicals in the social sciences and humanities disciplines. The Bouquet Général collection is currently comprised of 149 titles from more than 40 publishers, teaching institutions and learned societies. The primary subject areas covered by the collection are history, psychology, economics, political science and sociology. It is anticipated that this collection will grow with additional titles focused in management, arts, literature, philosophy and religious science.

  • Adam Matthew Digital Collection (CRKN) is Here!

    Through our participation in the CRKN Digital Content Initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Adam Matthew Digital which consists of eight separate full-text collections that offer manuscripts and rare printed sources detailed enough for scholarly research and accessible enough for undergraduate use.

    China: Trade, Politics and Culture 1793-1980

    Search unique, primary source material relating to China's history from 1793 to 1980. It offers rare, printed materials (including missionary periodicals, atlases and books), colour paintings, maps, drawings by English and Chinese artists, as well as photographs, sketches and ephemeral items, depicting Chinese people, places, customs and events.

    Defining Gender, 1450-1910, Online

    Search original source materials on the topics of gender, leisure and consumer culture. Defining Gender is structured in five sections: Conduct and Politeness; Domesticity and the Family; Consumption and Leisure; Education and Sensibility; The Body.

    Medieval Travel Writing

    Access this extensive collection of manuscript materials for the study of medieval travel writing in fact and in fantasy, dating from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The main focus is accounts of journeys to the Holy Land, India and China. Supporting the manuscripts are relevant secondary texts, maps of journeys, bibliographies and glossaries.

    Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice, 1490-2007

    Access thousands of original manuscripts, pamphlets, books, paintings, maps and images on the topic of trans-Atlantic slavery and abolition.   • New display on the Olympics and Social Protests

    Hopefully you'll have a chance to come into the Library to view our current display which showcases library materials on two distinct topics:

    1. Olympics - We created this display to tie in with the 2008 Olympics held in Beijing this summer from August 8-24.

    2. Social Protests - Because of the recent global social protests against China this year, we felt it would be a good opportunity to showcase Library materials focusing on the topics of social and political activism.  Some specific topics are globalization, Canadian protest movements, antiwar movements, civil rights movements, cyber protests and more.

  • New database for music research: Grove Music Online

    The University Library is pleased to announce the addition of Grove Music Online to our collection of electronic reference resources. Grove Music Online, acquired through our partnership in the TAL (The Alberta Library) consortium, offers access to full text scholarly information on all aspects of music. This database, as well as two other authoritative reference resources, are available via the Oxford Music Online gateway.

    Databases and reference resources available via Oxford Music Online gateway include:

    Grove Music Online: An authoritative source for music research, including the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition (2001); The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992); and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition (2001).

    Oxford Companion to Music: Covers a broad range of subjects: composers, performers, conductors, individual works, instruments and notation, forms and genres. From the study of music & theory, aesthetics, scholarship - to the way it is performed and disseminated, the Companion provides comprehensive, accessible coverage of music in all its artistic, historical, cultural, and social dimensions. Available as part of a subscription to Grove Music Online.

    The Oxford Dictionary of Music: Includes entries on composers, performers, conductors, musical terms and forms, instruments, works, venues, and a host of other topics. Available as part of a subscription to Grove Music Online.

  • New Database: Addiction Abstracts

    The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce the availability of Addiction Abstracts, which provides international coverage of literature on substance and behavioral addictions and related topics. Produced in collaboration with the National Addiction Centre in the UK, it indexes over 100 journals, books, reports and conference proceedings. Addiction Abstracts, available via the Informworld platform, is a rich source of information for any professional needing the most up-to-date literature in psychology, psychiatry, public health medicine, health behaviour, treatment and prevention.

  • Oxford Art Online is the Library's Newest Database

  • Just for You! Online Access to Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print

    Based on the very positive feedback we received during our trial of these products, the University Library is pleased to announce the addition of Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print to our collection of electronic reference resources.

    Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) provides access to test and assessment instrument information in areas such as psychology (clinical & counseling), education, business and leadership.     The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce the purchase of Choice Reviews Online (CRO), an electronic version of Choice magazine that librarians, faculty members and key decision makers rely upon for scholarly reviews. CRO analyzes academic books, electronic media and Internet resources, providing current, authoritative, and concise academic reviews. It also includes Editor's Picks and Hot Topics that do not appear in print.

    University of Lethbridge students, staff and faculty can register on the site to use the full personalization features of Choice Reviews Online, including saving lists of reviews, saving search strategies, and creating a profile to receive monthly notification of new reviews in particular areas.

  • What does poverty in Lethbridge look like?

    In March, 2007 The South West Alberta Coalition on Poverty asked community leaders, front line workers and those experiencing poverty to take photographs of images of poverty in Lethbridge.  The photos were then collaged into display boards which are now being displayed in various locations throughout our community.  These photos are now on display in our Library and we hope you take time to look at them when you're in the Library.

    We've created a table display of Library books that focus on poverty and related issues in Canada.  Most of the books are available for checkout so please feel free to sign them out at the General Services Desk.  For more information, check out our General Displays webpage.

  • New Library donor display recognizes Dr. Edward Mikhail

    Take time to look at our most current donor display showcasing 134 books of approximately 3,400 books donated to our Library by Dr. Edward Mikhail. Most of his collection is Anglo and Anglo-Irish drama/literature.  Dr. Mikhail was a Professor in the  English Department at the University of Lethbridge from 1967 to 1993.

  • International Women's Day display

    The theme for International Women's Day on March 8, 2008 is Strong Women, Strong World. To celebrate this important day, we created a display of Library materials that focus on topics such as Women's Rights, Women in Politics, Sex Discrimination Against Women, Women Suffrage, Violence Against Women and more.  Hopefully you'll have time to come into the Library, look over the materials and check out any titles that interest you.

    "In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace. Following the United Nations' lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women's Day.

    The University of Lethbridge Library is pleased to announce our newest trial database, Nursing Reference Center (NRC). Researchers can access high quality, recent clinical evidence and knowledge on conditions and diseases, patient education, and drug and reference information from top publishers. A point-of-care reference tool, this database provides access to thousands of full text documents, covering diseases and conditions, labs and diagnostics, as well as drug and reference information.   • Thanks to Shastri for the Library's expanding India studies collection

    In an article published in the January issue of The Legend, Librarian Lorelei Harris says the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) provides annual funds for libraries at its Canadian member organizations to purchase any materials published or produced in India. “The cross-disciplinary India studies collection that we have developed includes religious studies, economics, sociology and political science resources. Without the SICI’s support, we may not have been able to provide these materials to our users,” says Harris.

    University Library is pleased to announce the purchase of the Springer E-Book Collection. Springer is the world's largest STM book publisher,with more than 3,000 new titles each year.

    The e-book collection totals approximately 6,000 titles from 2005, 2006, and 2007 and covers the following disciplines: Architecture, Behavioral Science, Biomedical and Life Science, Business and Economics, Chemistry and Material Science, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science, Law, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics and Astronomy.

  • Some Library services unavailable Good Friday morning

    Some Library services will be unavailable the morning of Good Friday.

    To improve security when accessing information in Your Library Record, the University Library is working out the details of introducing a new PIN requirement (in addition to Your Name and Campus ID#) when you:

    The morning of April 6 (Good Friday, 8am to noon), please be aware that we will be testing the Library system's PIN requirement. We advise you to avoid trying to use all Library online services involving the above-listed functions that morning while testing is occurring, as system behaviour will be variable and some functions will not be accessible.

    When PIN testing concludes April 6 at noon, all patron login functions will return to normal. We will post notices of any further PIN testing that may be necessary, as well as the date on which the new PIN requirement is turned on (this date has not yet been determined).

  • SciFinder Scholar is now available!

    The University Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of the research database, SciFinder Scholar, effective January 1, 2007.

    Our purchase is part of the “Masters Share” program, which allows us two concurrent users shared between three institutions. At present, the SciFinder Scholar software is loaded on the five computers closest to the Library’s Information Services Desk on Level 10. By the end of February 2007, it will be loaded on all of the log-in work stations within the Library.

    Faculty members who would like access from their office computers, may download the software by following this link.

  • Library Earns A in 2006 Globe and Mail University Report Card

    The University of Lethbridge Library scored grades ranging from "A-" to "B" in the library related categories.  Our Library made the "A" list in two categories: service provided by library staff and online library resources.  We made the "B" list in overall Library services, availability of journals, library hours of operation, total number of library holdings and availability of quiet study space.

  • Trial access to The ScientificWorld Journal (TSWJ)

    The Library is currently engaging in a trial of The ScientificWorldJOURNAL (TSWJ) which runs until the end of December, 2006.

    TSWJ, a peer reviewed journal for the biomedical, life and environmental sciences, is reviewed by 700 international scientists. It includes other journals such as TSW Urology, TSW Development and Embryology, and TSW Holistic Health and Medicine. Abstracts and fulltext are available.

    The University of Lethbridge Art Collection On-line Database is now available to the general public.  With an entry for every work in the collection of the University Gallery, the database provides information on artist's nationality and culture, artist's biographies, curator's essays as well as information about individual works (medium, technique, editions, exhibition history etc.).   Currently there are over 2200 images and growing.

  • New database: BIR (Book Index with Reviews)

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of: Book Index with Reviews. This database provides annotations and over 800,000 full-searchable reviews of over 3.8 million book titles from authoritative sources: Library Journal, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, CHOICE, and others. Fiction and non-fiction titles for juvenile and adult audiences are included in the database, in all genres.

    BIR allows users to:
    -Find books by a favorite author, or on any topic
    -Identify the most popular titles in any genre or subject area
    -Use a wide range of search strategies to find the right book
    -Keep and maintain lists and bibliographies for work, school or fun

    Trial access to CINAHL Plus with Full Text and Pre-CINAHL will be available until the Library's subscription to the Ovid version of CINAHL expires on March 31, 2007. An index to over 3,000 English language journals in Nursing and allied health fields, CINAHL Plus with Full Text includes full text for over 560 journals, some going back to 1937. Pre-CINAHL offers current awareness of recently published articles not yet indexed and added to the CINAHL database.

  • EndNote is here!

    Keeping track of references and creating bibliographies just became easier. EndNote, a software package, is now available to the University community. It allows you to: Students can access it on computers in the labs, study center and Library. Faculty and staff can have a copy installed on their personal workstations.   • Newspaper database added to Library collection

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Newspaper Direct Press Display. PressDisplay provides online access to today's newspapers from around the world in full-color, full-page format. The database currently includes over 260 titles from over 55 countries in 30 languages. Viewers can browse articles and other key content, such as pictures, advertisements, classifieds, and notices, just as if they were reading the familiar print edition of their favourite newspaper.  The service also provides a 60-day backfile and the ability to perform keyword searches within any issue.   • Search for images and more in ARTstor Digital Library

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of ARTstor Digital Library. ARTstor's mission is to use digital technology to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning. It is a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data; the tools to use those images; and a usage environment that seeks to balance the rights of content providers with the interests of content users. Currently, ARTstor has 400,000 images and will have at least 500,000 images by June 2006. While ARTstor's strengths are most apparent in the fields of art, art history, architecture, visual communication, anthropology and history, ARTstor contains images to support research in many other disciplines. For example, ARTstor contains hundreds of images of structures (buildings, bridges, etc.) relevant in engineering disciplines, as well as hundreds of images in medical fields (anatomy, etc.) This is one of eight electronic products being offered through our participation in the CRKN Humanities and Social Sciences Content Expansion.   • New database: Early Canadiana Online. Access primary documents on Canada's heritage

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Early Canadiana Online, a digital library providing access to over 2 million pages of Canada's printed heritage. It features works published from the time of the first European settlers up to the early 20th Century. Users may be familiar with ECO because we have had access to the free portion of its collections for some time (Canadian Women's History, Colonial Government Journals, English Canadian Literature, History of French Canada, Hudson's Bay, Jesuit Relations, Native Studies). Now, however, we have full access to all ECO collections.     The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of SAGE Full-Text Collections and SAGE Journals Online. SAGE Full-Text Collections indexes 220 journals in 10 disciplines: Education, Management & Organization Studies, Materials Science, Nursing & Health Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Urban Studies & Planning. These collections are valuable for their deep backfiles, going back to Volume 1, Issue 1 in some cases. SAGE Journals Online indexes 157 journals, with coverage back to 1999. These journals cover the same disciplines as the SAGE Full-Text Collections, but there is no duplication of titles.     The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Alexander Street Press databases. This is one of eight electronic products being offered through our participation in the CRKN Humanities and Social Sciences Content Expansion.

    These databases provide access to primary texts in the humanities and social sciences, and cover six broad areas: North American history; Drama, theatre, and film; Women's history and literature; Music; African and African Diaspora history and literature; and Latin American and Latino history and literature.   • New database available for Canadian Studies and History

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of Canada's Heritage from 1844 (Globe and Mail). This is one of eight electronic products being offered through our participation in the CRKN Humanities and Social Sciences Content Expansion. The database consists of the digitized full-image archive of The Globe and Mail newspaper dating back to when it was founded by George Brown in 1844 as The Globe. The content includes every news story, photograph, map, advertisement, classified ad, political cartoon, birth, marriage and death notices and letters to the editor from The Globe and Mail. Coverage of issues from early life in Canada West (formerly Upper Canada), Confederation, through the World Wars, major conflicts, first flight of man, the sinking of great ships are all detailed and covered in Canada's Heritage from 1844 (Globe and Mail). The database offers enhanced digital reproductions of every page in downloadable Adobe PDF files. Each page is rendered searchable through optical character recognition (OCR) software. The file is updated annually, and currently covers the period 1844-2002.  For further information, please contact your subject librarian or:

  • Faculty and Grad Students: Chronicle of Higher Education now available online

    The University Library is pleased to announce the purchase of a campus-wide site license to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

    The Chronicle of Higher Education is the No. 1 source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. A subscription to The Chronicle includes access to all of this Web site and to Academe Today, our daily e-mail newsletter.

    Online, The Chronicle is published every weekday and is the top destination for news, advice, and jobs for people in academe. The Chronicle's Web site features the complete contents of the latest issue; daily news and advice columns; thousands of current job listings; articles published since September 1989; vibrant discussion forums; and career-building tools such as an online CV's, salary databases, and more.

    The Chronicle's audited Web-site traffic is routinely more than 10 million pages a month, seen by more than 800,000 unique visitors.

  • Now available online: Economist Intellligence Unit Country Reports and ViewsWire

    The University Library is pleased to announce the availability of: Economist Intelligence Unit. This is one of eight electronic products being offered through our participation in the CRKN Humanities and Social Sciences Content Expansion.

    Description:     Country Reports and ViewsWire provide comprehensive economic, political and business analysis on over 200 countries.

    Country Reports offer in-depth economic, political and business analysis and short-term market outlooks for almost 200 countries. Each report examines the political scene, economic policies and development plans, domestic economy, trends in production and demand, monetary and fiscal conditions, wages and prices, sectoral trends, foreign trade, capital flows, exchange rates and foreign debt, and also reports on national, regional and global events that affect business in the short to medium term. Detailed two-year forecasts complement the analysis and pinpoint political and economic developments and trends.

    Country Reports are updated monthly for 117 key countries, and quarterly for others. Archival access back to January 1986 is available and includes downloadable tables into Excel) spreadsheet format.

    ViewsWire covers 201 countries, and offers daily, concise analytical briefings on economic, political, business, finance and regulatory developments around the world. Downloadable data such as global financial indicators are available into Excel) spreadsheet format. ViewsWire includes selected portions of two other EIU products: Country Finance and Country Commerce. ViewsWire analysis is available archived back to 1997.

    The Writing Centre is available to all UofL students who need help with essays, reports, and other written assignments. A trained consultant will help you with the stages of the writing process such as getting started, writing your essay, diagnosing weak areas, or adopting a writing standard such as APA or MLA.

  • NEW to the Library! University Library Donors display area

    Check out our new "University Library Donors" display area!   Located to the right of the Library entrance, adjacent to the Current Serials collection, this new display area was established to recognize the many and generous gifts received by the U of L Library over the years.  The first display honors Wilfrid and Magdalena Eggleston, who gave the Library a valuable and sought after collection of  3000  classic works of Canadian literature and history. We've also created a Donations Displays webpage to inform our users about the most current display.

    Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) provides coverage on subjects such as librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management.  The database indexes more than 600 periodicals plus books, research reports, and proceedings.  Access LISTA through the Library Home page under Indexes/Databases.

  • New to Us! Library Donor Display: Wilfred Eggleston Collection

    Take time to look at our most current display showcasing 300 of the 3000 books donated to our Library by Magdalena Eggleston, in memory of her husband, Wilfred Eggleston.   Eggleston's love of literature and interest in Canadian writing led him to compile a vast collection of books, many of which are autographed first editions.  Check them out on the donor shelves near the newspaper collection on level 10 in the Library.  Yours to sign out if you wish...   • Looking for the Library's How-to Guides?

    The Library's "How-to Guides" have been divided into two separate categories:

    1. Research Guides
    2. Writing Guides

    These, along with our "Subject Guides" and "Class Guides," can be found from the Library's homepage in numerous ways: RESEARCH  HELP (centre block on Library's Homepage) - offers complete list as well as list of types of guides  http://www.uleth.ca/lib/guides/

    Library Homepage > HELP > Guides - guides by type * Whichever way you access the Guides, you will see that we have maintained an additional separate link to our most used guide "Citing Sources". We will also be adding a fifth category of guides which will most likely be called "Technology / Equipment Guides" or something similar.
     
    So what is the difference between all these types of guides? RESEARCH GUIDES:  
    -  provide help with all aspects of finding and evaluating information
    -  general in nature

    WRITING GUIDES:
    -  provide help at all stages of the academic writing process
    -  offer help with grammar, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism etc.

    SUBJECT GUIDES:
    -  provide selective lists of resources in specific subject areas
    -  provide advice on finding and using information in these areas (eg. Music Scores, Company Info., Genealogy, Philosophy)

    CLASS GUIDES:
    -  developed for specific classes or groups of students working on a specific assignment
    -  often an adjunct to an information literacy session given by one of the Librarians and may only be available for the period of time before the assignment is due or while the course is offered (at the
    discretion of the Librarian who developed the guide).

    TECHNOLOGY / EQUIPMENT GUIDES:
    -  provide help with things like "burning a CD" or "connecting to a database from off-campus"

  • Spring Cleaning Alert!

    In early May Library staff will begin a project to clean the book collection shelves on Levels 9 and Level 10 (north).  Please be aware that the project involves the use of vacuum cleaners, so nearby study areas will be rather noisy.  We apologize in advance for the disruption, and will endeavour to complete the project as quickly as we can.

    University network Wireless Access Points are available on Level 10 and part of Level 11. This service is available to UofL students, faculty and staff. First-time users must visit Desktop Support (D570) before connecting their laptops to the U of L campus network.     Freedom to Read Week, Feb. 22-28th, "encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms." The Library has created two displays (in the Hall of Honour and near the Level 10 General Services Desk) on this theme so enjoy!
