Aug 29 Left Camp with Ashe East & parties & turned finally eastward. Morning quite chilly & hoar frost on the grass in shady places. Crossed the Waterton & Belly Rivers & stopped for lunch at a creek 4 m beyond the latter. Got a geological sketch of Mt Wilson from the N. Came on again & got back to Depot at position of Galways Foot Hill astron. Station about 7 P.M. Having had some difficulty & delay in crossing brooks &c. The traders now camped N of the line near our trail.

Geol. Having heard that they brought a sample of coal down to the DepÙt, enquired particulars as to locality &c. It comes from a point at junction of Waterton & St. Mary rivers. It occurs in the banks of both streams, lies nearly flat. On the Waterton R. the seam about 5 ft in thickness. 6 feet on the St.Marys. The point of junction of these rivers is said to be about 50 miles N. of here & perhaps also a little E. The traders at Hoop Up use the coal for fires & in a Smelting? forge. It is said to be of very good quality. A trail crossing the Boundary about 5 m E of here leads to Hoop Up. The trail just west of the Buttes also leads to the same place.
