Fort Shaw

Fort Shaw was built in 1867 to protect settlers in the Sun River Valley in Blackfeet territory It was closed in 1891 but was used as an Indian School until 1910. Some of the original buildings still exist as part of a county school.

Col. John Gibbon and his troops were sent from Fort Shaw to engage Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perces after they passed through Fort Fizzle in the Lolo Canyon area. Gibbon caught up the Indians at the Big Hole, where almost half his soldiers were wounded or killed.
Trek students visited the Fort Shaw school in 1975 and were shown plans for the old hospital.
