Camp Lewis, a summer post for a single company of infantry, had been disbanded in 1875. In 1877, the trading post and stockade of the Reed and Bowles Trading Post was the lone outpost of civilization in the area.
The Nez Perce had visited Reed and Bowles on other trips to buffalo country. Camping a couple of miles away, the warriors came over to the post on the evening of September 21. Unfortunately, no accounts appear to exist of what happened that evening.
