When all this news reached Lewiston, alarm struck the settlers here. On the high vantage point of this hill, they dug rifle pits for their self-defense. Jcust in front of the library is one of the rifle pits from that time.

Although the fleeing non-treaty Nez Perce bands never actually came closer than forty miles to Lewiston, the existence of the rifle pit here shows just how apprehensive the settlers were during the early summer of 1877.
