Here's the story.

Descending from the 9th Street bridge there it was. A huge circle of the cutist 4x4 vehicles I had ever seen.. The 1979 Suzuki LJ80 was just what I had been looking for. A rugged "light jeep" that would be easy to tow behind my van. Within days I had made a deal after picking out the top-of-the-line from the 15 or 20 they had in stock.

This time I had done things right as three weeks later going over the same bridge I discovered the lot bare. The reason: "Locals" wanted the big macho machines and with little interest being shown the dealer had moved his whole line to his other dealership up north where they were "hot items," I'm told.

A year or so later Suzuki "highwayized" their offerings as the Samari and the Tracker evolved. I believe the more rugged "light jeep" only sold in Canada for a couple of years.

Following an historic trail in the U.S. a few years ago we were swarmed with admirers at every stop. We soon discovered the nostalgia surrounding "the little beast" was because earlier versions of the LJ Series had been imported into the U.S. There were fond memories. See Timeline

Note - a bicycle rack can serve many purposes.

My "Special Limited Edition - Prospector" came with winch and more importantly a special Suzuki fiberglas hard top in addition to the soft top
Just for fun - too.

Hook up the trailer and off we go to the Canada Day parade.

So for over 25 years the little jeep has carried me over many trails. Although the mileage reads 39,000 miles most of it was in tow. Never abused, it's job was to aid in retracing historic routes as needed.
Reliable - what can I say. It never let me down. I never had to get any parts except for the odd tune up and they were easily found. A maintenance note under the hood shows people worldwide how to service.

In addition to features such as the heavy duty bumpers and winch, the "Special Limited Edition" came with full floor and rear cargo area upholstery and a great flip down back seat.
