Lewis and Clark were asked to find the best portage between the Mississippi River and Columbia River basins.

They chose an ancient trail used by tne Nez Perce Indians between the Bitter Root River in Montana and the Clearwater River in Idaho. It was their route to buffalo hunting country in Montana. It was not an easy trip with a series of mountains blocking the way. between the two rivers.

By 1932 the Lolo Trail had been turned into a motorway which you can still travel at your own risk.

Clark went on to say -

From this mountain I could observe high ruged mountains in every direction as far as I could see.
