Registering for Classes

In Canada, registration is completed each semester by you, the student. The act of registration and selecting the right courses are solely your responsibility. Review the following steps below to learn how to choose classes and get registered for your first semester on campus!

Undergraduate students should follow the steps below.

The Bridge is the tool which allows you to register for classes. The Bridge also provides you with access to your personal information, admission status, tuition and fees, exam schedules, scholarship applications, and more.  You may have already created a username and password to check on your admission status.

If you haven't already done so, you will need to set up a username and a secure password to login to the Bridge. You will use the same username and password to access many other important and useful tools such as your email, library account, and Moodle, so make sure to record them in a safe place so you won’t forget.

To set up your campus login:

  • Have your nine-digit uLethbridge ID (from your Offer of Admission Letter) available
  • Go to ulethbridge.ca/loginsetup
  • Follow the steps to select a username, password, and security questions.

At the University of Lethbridge, each student is responsible for choosing and registering in their own classes every term. The classes are not prescribed on a term by term basis, so while there is some flexibility, it's very important to register as early as possible, because required classes can sometimes fill up.

It is a good idea to look up your registration dates and plan out your courses in advance to make the registration process as quick and easy as possible. Classes have limited space and some will fill up quickly, so try to register soon after your registration window opens. You will find your registration dates on the Bridge (Student → Registration → Registration Status).

Use your Program Planning Guide (PPG) to help you select your courses. Select the academic year, appropriate faculty and major/program to find your specific guide.

The program planning guide outlines all of the necessary courses for your program, along with suggestions for electives.  Some PPGs include a sample sequencing plan to help you decide which classes should be taken in which semester. If you are coming from a post-secondary education system where courses are pre-determined, choosing optional classes or understanding this process may seem overwhelming.

If you have one, try to follow the sequencing plan as close as possible and when in doubt, please contact Academic Advising. Advisors are available to help students with program planning. Program planning guides, registration worksheets, and more detailed instructions on the entire registration process are available on the Registrar’s Office and Student Services website.

Second Degree students:

  • If you are a Second Degree student, your PPG is customized, and will have been sent to you as a PDF document from your Faculty in a later email. Please review your emails to find this document. It is very important that this document be consulted prior to registration.
  • If you are an Arts and Science Second Degree student and would like to request a waiver for past courses that you have completed, please email your course outlines to artsci.advising@uleth.ca as soon as possible. Please refer to your PPG for details.

After reviewing the sequencing plan from your program planning guide, you can look up classes on the Bridge (Student → Registration → Look Up Classes).

Please note that in this timetable search function, you will not search by major or program but by class subject. For example, if you are an Agricultural Biotechnology major, you will see that your major is not listed under "Subject". However, by referring to the PPG it can be determined that Agricultural Studies 1000 is a required class. When you search for this class, you will find it by selecting "Agricultural Studies" in the subject drop down menu.

Ensure you have all necessary prerequisites for the class, and make note of the five-digit CRN (course reference number) for later use. You can view the Course Catalogue for more detailed descriptions of the courses. The descriptions will contain helpful information regarding pre-requisite classes (classes you must have completed before taking other courses) and information regarding when and where the class is held.

Required Lab or Tutorial | Some courses have a mandatory lab and/or tutorial component to review concepts covered in lectures and work on assignments. You must register for the lecture and lab/tutorial at the same time or else you will get a registration error.

As you choose your classes for the semester, using a Registration Worksheet will help you determine how your schedule will come together. It will help you ensure that your schedule is balanced throughout the week and that there aren't any time conflicts.

The full course load for an undergraduate program is five courses per semester. Five courses is the maximum number of courses into which the system will allow you to register. However, we recommend that as a new international student, you register for three or four courses (9-12 credits) in your first term so that you can adjust to the academic demands of the university and your new life in Canada.

Once you have completed the above steps, you are ready to register for classes! Finish the next steps to complete the process:

  • Log in to the Bridge with your uLethbridge username and password
  • Go to ‘Student’ → ‘Registration’ → ‘Select Term’. Select the appropriate term from drop down menu and submit.
  • Select ‘Add or Drop Classes’. Enter the five-digit CRNs (course reference number) in the text boxes which appear under ‘Add Classes Worksheet’. You may add multiple courses at once. If you do not know the course reference numbers, you may look for them in ‘Class Search’ at the bottom of the ‘Add or Drop Classes’ window (the same search function may be found under ‘Registration’ → ‘Look Up Classes’).
  • To drop a course from your schedule, go to ‘Student’ → ‘Registration’ → ‘Add or Drop Classes’. Click the drop down arrow next to the course you wish to drop, select ‘DROP’, and submit changes.

Confirm that your courses are correct by looking at your schedule. Go to ‘Student’ → ‘Registration’ → ‘Week at a Glance’. Select your term from the drop-down menu, submit, and make sure that your schedule looks correct. You may want to print your schedule and keep a copy to use for reference.

You may encounter error messages while attempting to register. You can learn more about the error messages and how to correct them by visiting the Registar's Office website. The Registrar's Office also has helpful registration videos you can view to help you understand the entire process. 

*To maintain your registration, you must send us a copy of your Letter of Introduction by the Study Permit Submission Deadline: September 1 for Fall admission and January 2 for Spring admission.*

As mentioned earlier, we recommend first year students plan to take no more than 3-4 courses in their first semester to allow for transition to Canada and our academic system. Please note: if you are a second degree student, you are not considered to be first year standing. Please consult with an academic advisor prior to choosing these courses.

The University of Lethbridge is a liberal education university that encourages its students to take courses from a wide variety of academic disciplines. After consulting your program planning guide, you will notice that you have Liberal Education Requirements (LERs) built into your program. These are courses that will broaden your knowledge in the Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.

To help build your confidence studying in a Canadian university environment and ensure your academic success, we recommend the following courses for first year students:

1) LBED 1000 - Knowledge and Liberal Education: This course will introduce you to basic higher academic skills such as critical thinking, numeracy, oral and written communications and research. It will help show you the different ways of learning including group work, labs and tutorials.

2) LBED 1500 - The First Year Experience: Mapping our Communities: This course includes an introduction to the many resources available for student support on campus, the liberal education philisophy of our institution, and career and study skills.

3) WRIT 1000 - Introduction to Academic Writing: This course is designed to develop skills in critical reading and writing at the university level and is highly recommended to students in their first semester.
