Program Description

Finance is the study of financial decision making in investment, portfolio management and corporate finance as well as managing risk in a volatile economy. Finance incorporates the basics of economics, accounting and statistics through quantitative and qualitative methods.

As a student you'll experience the best financial management education through our hands-on training inside and outside the classroom. Our world class Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching, or 'trading room" is fully integrated into our teaching, bridging your academic knowledge and practical experience, making you career ready.

About the Finance major

As a major in finance, you'll study areas such as corporate and personal finance, fundamentals of investments, global financial management, financial technology (FinTech), managerial skill development, and management policy and strategy. You will draw from fields such as economics, human resources management, social responsibility, English, psychology, and marketing.

Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA®)

Our major in finance has been acknowledged as incorporating at least seventy percent of the CFA® Program CBOK and placing emphasis on the CFA® Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program.

Our program is also CFA® accredited. As part of this accreditation, the CFA® offers our students scholarships to write the CFA® exams. To date, about 80 per cent of our students who received the scholarship passed their level I exams, much higher the industry pass rate. Learn more about the CFA®.

Canadian Securities Course (CSC)

The CSC is another step towards a career in finance and is recommended for investment advisors. Students can complete the CSC while in the program or after they graduate. Learn more about the Canadian Securities Course.

AACSB accreditation

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International is the world’s largest global business education network and the Dhillon School of Business is part of only six per cent of business schools worldwide accredited by this international network.

Students who graduate from an AACSB accredited school are contenders for careers with top, global organizations who only hire from AACSB accredited schools; they are offered more competitive salaries; they have a better chance of getting into graduate programs; and they have more employers interested in them after graduation.

When you graduate from the Dhillon School of Business you’ll get all these AACSB benefits as well as the assurance of the highest quality and most relevant education out there.

Dual campuses

We also offer the flexibility of two campuses: Lethbridge and Calgary. Our Calgary Campus meets the needs of working professionals with evening and weekend classes, while the Lethbridge campus is more traditional with an emphasis on daytime classes and a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities to explore. Both locations welcome international and mature students. We also have a means for students coming from other institutions to have previous courses considered for transfer credit, as well as a second degree program.

Additional opportunities

Once you have chosen your major, consider the option of working toward a secondary area of focus. A minor will enhance your resumé and be recognized on your transcript. Several minors complement finance well, such as supply chain management, not-for-profit/social responsibility, international management, new media and Indigenous governance. Learn more about our available minors.

Experiential education opportunities

There are many opportunities for students to apply the theories they've learned in the classroom to real-life, hands-on situations. As a Dhillon student, you'll have access to these programs and more:

You can also visit our Dhillon School of Business website to learn about more student experience opportunities.

Management Certificate

If you’re changing your focus professionally or if you do not wish to pursue an entire degree, complete a management certificate in this area of study.

Quote:

“My uLethbridge experience can be defined by one word: opportunity. The [Dhillon School of Business] offered me countless opportunities to learn, network, and develop my professional skills. By majoring in Finance, I was able to develop a genuine understanding of the financial markets and participate in activities such as the student managed investment fund course and the Finance Club. Getting involved and taking advantage of all the opportunities that are offered was easily one of the best decisions of my post-secondary journey.” - Joel, BMgt Finance (Co-op)
