Awards and Scholarships

 
In 2016, uLethbridge awarded more than $3.8 million in funding to graduate students through scholarships, awards and bursaries. We also offer a variety of other financial support options. Please see below a few internal and external opportunities:

Examples of Internal Opportunities:

School of Graduate Studies Fellowship
Application: separate application required
Value: $15,000 for one year
This application is to be completed by students entering full-time MA, MSc or PhD thesis-based graduate programs. All students newly admitted to their program in this calendar year in January, May and September are considered.

Nexen Fellowship in Water Research
Application: separate application required
Value: Masters: $5,000 for 1 year or PhD $15,000 (renewable for one additional year)
Entering or continuing students conducting water-related research in a full-time MA, MSc or PhD thesis-based graduate program who are examing issues of water resources and water related activities.

Dean’s Scholarship
Application: No separate application required; automatically considered at time of application for admission.
Value: $10,000/annum
These scholarships are offered to students who have outstanding academic records, show research promise and aptitude in their field.

Domestic Tuition Scholarship
Application: No separate application required; automatically considered at time of application for admission.
Value: up to $8,000 for Masters/ up to $16,000 for Doctoral students
These scholarships are offered to students who have outstanding academic records, show research potential and/or aptitude in their field. Funding is spread out over the length of program.

International Tuition Scholarship
Application: No separate application required; automatically considered at time of application for admission.
Value: up to $17,000 for Masters/ up to $34,000 for Doctoral students
These scholarships are offered to students who have outstanding academic records, show research potential and/or aptitude in their field. Funding is spread out over the length of program.

Prentice Institute
Application: No separate application; indicate interest in your application for admission.
Value: $12,000/annum
The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy excels at research about the changing human population and its potential impacts on social and economic issues, and communicating its findings widely. Pursuit of thesis research, normally under the supervision of a Prentice Research Affiliate, in alignment with the research objectives of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy: long-term global impacts of demographic, economic and social issues related to changes in the world population patterns.

Examples of External Opportunities:

Alberta Indigenous Graduate Award
Application: Separate application is required.
Value: up to $15,000
The purpose is to support Indigenous Albertans (Status Indian/First Nations, Non-Status Indian/First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) in their pursuit of a master's degree or doctoral degree.

Alberta Human Rights & Multiculturalism
Application: Separate application is required.
Value: $10,000 for Masters/ $15,000 for Doctorate
This scholarship was created to encourage Canadian graduate studies that will create value for Albertans by: promoting informed thinking about Canadian human rights, cultural diversity, and multiculturalism; encouraging the pursuit of studies in Canadian human rights, cultural diversity, and multiculturalism, and; building capacity to undertake human rights or multicultural work in Canada.

Alberta Queen Elizabeth II Entrance Scholarship
Application: No application is required; all eligible applicants are considered.
Value: up to $10,800 for Masters/ $15,000 for Doctorate
This is an Alberta Scholarship program award and the purpose is to reward the high level of achievement of Canadians residing and pursuing graduate studies in Alberta.

TriCouncil Master Graduate Scholarships
Application: separate application is required
Value: $17,500/year
TriCouncil Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields.

Vanier Doctoral
Application: separate application is required
Value: $50,000/year
Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields.
