Abstract
Self-Esteem is an important element of the well being of any individual. In a class setting it enhances the learning process and, when added to cooperative learning centres, results in growth of pupil confidence, pride, and self-esteem. This research project was done with the participation of twenty-five grade four French Immersion students. Project results indicate that the self-esteem level of pupils increased when they were invited to participate in a series of cooperative learning centres. For five weeks, students worked cooperatively in learning centres for a daily period of an hour. Each week had a theme and followed the guidelines of the grade four curriculum. Each theme was integrated through a number of subject areas. In all activities, it was important to challenge the students to engage and maintain their interest. It takes a community to raise a child. With this popular belief in mind, many volunteers, parents, students and teachers took part in this journey. They all added to the self-esteem growth otherwise limited to experiences and interactions with the classroom teacher. The results of the project are of value for all. Most important, the students became more involved in class discussions, where they mentioned feeling good. They also demonstrated increased helpfulness, increased willingness to share and were visibly happier. Working to develop the self-esteem throughout this project is an experience that needs to be repeated in every classroom each year. Teaching students to work cooperatively and building their self-esteem is more than simply following the curriculum; it provides the necessary tools in the development of mature, happy, productive members of the society.
