Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI)

RNA research is one of the fastest growing fields in the life sciences, with implications for many diseases, our understanding of evolution, as well as biotechnological applications and has enormous economic potential. The Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute is dedicated to foster and facilitate RNA research and training excellence, to contribute to the multidisciplinary research and teaching community at the University of Lethbridge, its surrounding communities and beyond, ultimately facilitating transfer of leading-edge knowledge into the private sector as well as academia. ARRTI constitutes a coordinated team effort advancing RNA research initiatives in complement to the excellence in the research, teaching, and training programs that already exist at the University of Lethbridge.

Members of the Institute operate several focus laboratories including

  • The laboratory for structure and function of small noncoding RNAs,
  • The laboratory for biomolecular design and engineering,
  • The laboratory for systems biology and mathematical modeling, and
  • The laboratory for synthetic biology.

Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Centre (ATIC)
The Centre’s purpose is to undertake a concentrated team effort for the advancement of scientific knowledge in remote sensing and imaging spectroscopy and to apply this knowledge to the monitoring of natural resources and the environment for the goal of global sustainability. The Centre’s research and development will support new applications in these areas utilizing the cutting-edge remote sensing technologies developed at the Centre.

The Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience
The Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) is a world-class research facility dedicated to providing a highly interactive and unique environment for behavioural neuroscience research in Canada. The Centre currently holds sixteen principal investigators and NeuroInvestigations Inc., as its industrial partner. The CCBN studies normal brain processes and processes affecting recovery from brain disorders, disease, and injury. Most of the work is systems-level neuroscience with rodents, but includes human neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, and neuroimaging.

The Canadian Centre for Research in Advanced Fluorine Technologies
The Canadian Centre for Research in Advanced Fluorine Technologies (C-CRAFT) is Canada's first collaborative group with concentration of unique expertise in fluorine chemistry. The establishment of C-CRAFT will allow the University to become a focal point for tackling challenges in materials, energy and the environment for which fluorine provides solutions, such as the oil and gas industry, manufacturing, and steel and aluminium refining, to name a few.

Centre for Culture and Community
The Centre for Culture and Community (CCC) will serve as a resource for University of Lethbridge faculty and community partners engaged in cultural and community-based studies and creative activity. The CCC's mission is to facilitate mutually beneficial university-community collaboration and resource-sharing with respect to social science and humanities research, creative activity, and outreach focused primarily, though not exclusively, on Lethbridge and Southern Alberta.

Centre for Oral History and Tradition
The Centre for Oral History and Tradition will see researchers collaborate on oral history projects, offer resources and training to students and researchers interested in making oral history part of their research process and work with partners, such as the University of Lethbridge Archives, to ensure oral history projects are properly executed, documented and available for future reference.

Five Core Members

Centre for Socially Responsible Marketing

The Centre for Socially Responsible Marketing aims to create and disseminate research-based knowledge. The goals of the centre include educating students and empowering nonprofit personnel in areas of social marketing, sustainability and social responsibility, and nonprofit marketing and management. The Centre accomplishes these goals by supporting and participating in conferences, community workshops, internal research support and invited speakers.

Institute for Space Imaging Science (ISIS)
Space imaging science is about using advanced imaging and computational technologies to better understand space and fundamental physics. ISIS explores our relationship with our own planet and our place in the Universe. At the heart of ISIS is innovation in space imaging technology -- allowing us to see space and the cosmos in new ways, and discover answers to questions that push boundaries of human understanding.

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy
The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is a multi-disciplinary, cross-faculty institute. The institute aims to conduct extensive research and provide outstanding information about the long-term global impacts of constantly changing demographics, economic, and social issues related to changes in the world population patterns.

The Small Business Institute
The Small Business Institute will link small business to the expertise of researchers, professionals and other business people. The focus of the Institute’s investigations will be on privately-held, small businesses varying from start-up to multigenerational. In addition to entrepreneurship and family-owned operations, other aspects of the Institute’s investigation will include franchises, not-for-profits, non-participating family members, succession, and sustainability.

Water Institute for Sustainable Environments (WISE)
WISE researchers are analyzing water resources, including natural science analyses of watersheds, and water quantity and quality; and overlapping social science investigations related to aspects such as water policy and economics. The studies often investigate water resources and river systems of western North America, including the Saskatchewan River Basin and adjacent watersheds. The investigations consider fundamental aspects of water science, as well as applied science and management directed towards the simultaneous goals of environmental health and socioeconomic prosperity.
