The University of Lethbridge is proud to support the Oldman Watershed Council and sign the Southern Alberta Water Charter on April 7, 2017. Students, Faculty, and Staff contribute in diverse ways to promote the importance of sustainability in our water supply. Our specific commitment as part of the Southern Alberta Water Charter is a new research study by Dr. Joe Rasmussen of the Water Institute for Sustainable Environments (WISE) that develops a drone-based approach to characterize stream water temperatures relative to the requirements of trout. This includes the use of a thermal, infrared camera mounted on a small drone allowing researchers to identify zones with cooler or warmer water and which are related to aspects such as spawning and summer survival of trout species. The project will commence in the summer of 2017.
