Track athletes earn Subway weekly awards

The Subway Pronghorn Athletes of the Week reflect a strong showing from the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team as Kayla Gallagher and Aaron Hernandez picked up the weekly awards after their performances at the Golden Bear Invitational in Edmonton.

In her first meet of the season, 2013 CIS Champion Gallagher opened the year with a strong effort. The Truro, Nova Scotia native’s furthest throw of 17.95 metres was good enough to capture a silver medal in the weight throw and also ranked her second in the CIS.

On the men's side, rookie Aaron Hernandez burst onto the university track scene with a double gold medal performance.

Friday night, Hernandez won the men's long jump with a jump of 6.98m. On Saturday, Hernandez led the way with a gold medal in men's triple jump. His jump of 14.88m was an Alberta junior men's provincial record and vaulted him to the top of the Canada West rankings and put him second in the CIS.

Hernandez and the rest of the Pronghorns will be in action next weekend at the Bison Classic, hosted by the University of Manitoba. The Canada West Championship meet will be back in Edmonton, Feb. 22-23.
