Student refugee initiative gets boost from Scotiabank

Students in the World University Service Canada (WUSC) club on campus are closer to welcoming a student from Syria this fall, thanks to a $5,000 donation from Scotiabank.

At right, Jamie McMullin, branch manager of Scotiabank West, recently presented a $5,000 cheque to the World University Service Canada club at the U of L. Students in the club were joined by Dr. Andy Hakin, at left, provost and vice-president academic, Dr. Anne Dymond, second from left, the club's faculty supervisor, and Paul Pan and Diane Minamide from the International centre.

Jamie McMullin (BMgt ’06), branch manager of Scotiabank West, recently presented the WUSC club with a cheque for $5,000 to go toward the WUSC Student Refugee Bursary. Scotiabank matched funds that were raised at the Annual International Dinner silent auction on March 10.

A student from Syria is expected to arrive later this summer, in time for the start of classes in September.
