UofL Guidelines
The University of Lethbridge welcomes students with disabilities who meet the current academic and program admission standards. The University of Lethbridge will continue to make its best efforts to accommodate the needs of qualified students with disabilities.
Disabilities Resource Centre's Responsibilities:
At the University of Lethbridge, the Disabilities Resource Centre has special responsibility
for advising students about accommodations for their disabilities.
Students must provide documentation of their disability in the form of
an assessment (e.g., medical, psychoeducational) and recommendations for accommodation. The assessment
and recommendations should be on the office letterhead of a professional
person with diagnostic expertise in the area of the disability.
University's Responsibilities:
Provision
of a supportive physical, academic, and social environment for all students
is the responsibility of the entire university. This may
include special parking arrangements, accommodated physical access, availability
of assistive/adaptive technology, special consideration in course registration,
accommodation in the delivery of instructional programs, testing arrangements,
and other forms of assistance. Every faculty and staff member of the university
is potentially involved with making reasonable accommodations for students
with disabilities. The physical environment of the University
of Lethbridge conforms to all established building codes and will conform to these codes in the future, including all
established building codes for those with disabilities.
Student's Responsibilities:
Students with disabilities are encouraged to be proactive in utilizing
the university services available and in communicating their needs. Students
are advised to consult with their professors, academic advisors,
disabilities resource staff, or counsellors. If a student with a disability wishes to appeal a decision
pertaining to their situation, the usual academic and non-academic avenues
of appeal would apply as described in the University
of Lethbridge Calendar. A student with a disability who is contemplating
an appeal may wish to consult with a counsellor in Counselling Services
or with the Associate Vice-President (Student Services) and Registrar.
Disability Accommodations:
Accommodations may require considerable advanced planning and liaison with other
agencies. The accommodation is intended to support the academic capabilities
of the student and to remove any unnecessary barriers
to the student's academic success. The requirement of accommodation does
not demand the sacrificing of academic standards and there are often several
alternatives that can accommodate differences in order to provide equality
of access to university services and facilities. Where an academic standard
is imposed but challenged by a student with a disability, the university
must provide objective evidence
that the standard is reasonable.
The University of Lethbridge is committed to a continuing process of making accommodations to qualified students with disabilities.
