Basic concepts and vocabulary in the practice and theory of art, based primarily on the period from 1800 to the present, that is the move from modernism to postmodernism, including painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, drawing and photo-arts.

Contemporary Art Practices and Theories

An introductory art history survey of contemporary art practices and theories. Many non-traditional art forms, media, and approaches are considered, such as performance art, process and time-based work, installation and environmental art, and public art. The course includes discussions of concepts and issues that inform the art of recent decades, and the place of contemporary art in visual culture.

A critical examination of sound, image and video construction, and the role of computers in contemporary art production. Two- and three-dimensional design issues and philosophy will be covered as they relate to computer environments and the contemporary artist's studio. A number of adjunct technologies will be presented such as digital scanning, digital darkroom, video editing, desktop publishing, digital sound studio and basic website creation.
