Convocation

Convocation is the formal ceremony for the conferral of degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Convocation ceremonies are held twice annually. The Spring ceremonies are scheduled for the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday following the week of the Victoria Day long weekend. The Fall ceremonies are scheduled for the Saturday following Thanksgiving in October. See the Academic Schedule for complete information.

The degrees of graduating students who are unable to attend convocation are conferred in absentia and held for pick-up or mailed to the students.

At Spring Convocation, the Faculties and Schools award medals to their most outstanding graduates.

The University celebrates many other achievements at Convocation. The University Senate awards Honorary Degrees for excellence in the arts, humanities, and sciences and for outstanding contributions to the local community. At the Spring Convocations, the Distinguished Teaching Award is presented to a university professor whose teaching is particularly inspiring and effective; and the Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, Scholarship, or Performance is awarded to meritorious members of the Academic Staff. The Alumni Association recognizes its Alumnus of the Year at the Fall Convocation.
