Immigration Procedures

Be prepared to present evidence of adequate funding: Canada Immigration will want to see that you have the equivalent of at least C$10,000 (excluding tuition costs) to cover the costs of your first year of study in Canada.
Student Visa Application Procedures

The process for obtaining student authorizations in Thailand is as follows:

  1. Apply to the institution and wait for the letter of acceptance (LOA). Institution turnaround time is crucial here. The Embassy in Bangkok accepts faxed LOAs to begin files, but requires the original letter when the visa is picked up by the student. E-mailed copies are not acceptable. Students need originals when entering Canada.
  2. After receiving LOA, students proceed to the nearest Canadian Embassy to apply for their student visa with appropriate documents.
  3. Documents:
    • valid passport,
    • 4 photos,
    • bank statement (to show financial support),
    • letter of guardianship (if under 18),
    • letter of financial support (usually from parents, but if from a third party, must be notarized),
    • transcripts, and
    • completed Canadian student visa application form.
    • The student will be informed at this time if the embassy requires additional documents.

  4. After the student applies for the student visa, he/she is usually required to take a medical examination since there is a high incidence of Tuberculosis (TB), especially in rural areas. In this case, the Embassy will give the student a file/case number to take to an Embassy-specified doctor/clinic. After completing the examination, the student will normally wait two to three days before the Embassy receives the exam results, at which time the student will be notified when he/she can pick up the visa or if an interview is required.
  5. The whole process should take approximately five working days to complete, but usually takes approximately 10 working days and can last for up to one month during the high season. Generally, if the Visa Officer sees that student is in a rush and must go soon, he/she will try to prioritize that student's visa application.
