What Distinguishes Anthropology from Other Social Sciences?

Two elements distinguish Anthropology:

an intensely comparative, wide-ranging view of human society and culture. Anthropologists study the ways of life and beliefs of people in virtually every place in the world, from Canadian popular culture to systems of personal meaning in small scale traditional societies.
a strong desire to know how individuals in specific cultures make sense of the world and respond to its challenges. Anthropologists therefore typically spend long periods doing field research in intense interaction with local people.
