The University of Lethbridge expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and students of Fuki Nishibayashi, a lecturer and sessional teacher in the Department of Modern Languages, who passed away tragically recently.

Fuki was born in November 1939. She received her B.A. with a major in piano from Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo in 1962. She taught piano and music theory in Tokyo for approximately the next 25 years.

In 1988 she passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency exam authorized by the Minister of Education, Science and Culture. She then held a series of increasingly challenging jobs as an instructor of Japanese Language.

In 1994 Fuki moved to Lethbridge as an instructor, employed by the Japanese Consulate, in a program for Japanese language teachers in Canada. Subsequently, she taught at Winston Churchill High School.

Fuki first came to the University of Lethbridge in September 1996 and taught Japanese as a contracted lecturer each year until her retirement in spring 2004. Since then, she continued on at the U of L as a sessional instructor, teaching one course per year.

A Celebration of Life for Fuki was held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Country Kitchen, 1715 Mayor Magrath Dr. South.
