Postdoctoral Fellows Extended Health Benefit Coverage

At the University of Lethbridge Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) are eligible for benefit coverage. The cost of this coverage is covered by the Faculty Supervisor and enrolment is coordinated by the University’s Pension and Benefits team. This supplemental health plan provides assistance for some hospital, medical and dental care expenses that are not covered by Alberta Health Care (e.g., prescription drugs, ambulance costs).

If a PDF appointment is full-time, any dependents are required to be enrolled in this supplemental plan unless their spouse/partner has comparable coverage (verification required). The plan is currently provided through Alberta Blue Cross. For information regarding opt-out procedures and/or to provide proof of alternate coverage, please contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

Note: Coverage starts on the first day of month following the month in which your postdoctoral appointment began.

Effective July 01, 2017 the yearly cost of the postdoctoral fellow benefits for single coverage is $567.96 per annum and family coverage is $1492.56 per annum.

For full plan details, please see the University of Lethbridge Benefits Booklet for Postdocs.

As of November 1, 2017, postdoctoral fellows will have access to the Employee and Family Assistance Programs (EFAP). These valuable services are provided through the Human Resources Wellness and Recognition Department. EFAP is a confidential resource provided to help faculty, staff and family members (who are under a university benefit plan) enhance their personal and workplace functioning. For more information, visit the Wellness & Recognition website or the Campus Services for Postdoctoral Fellows page on the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs website.

Postdoctoral fellows who are ineligible (e.g. postdoctoral fellows who are funded by external awards, where the money does not flow through the University payroll system) for extended health benefits are encouraged to make private arrangements for benefit plans and insurance coverage.

CPP and EI Employer Contributions For Faculty Supervisors

The vast majority of Postdoctoral Fellows are paid salaries from a faculty supervisor’s research grant (e.g. NSERC Discovery Grant) or from other funds that are operated or administered by the University of Lethbridge. As of November 1, 2017, Postdoctoral Fellows who are paid from these sources will be classified as employees and their pay will be subject to monthly CPP and EI employee deductions.

For future contracts and grants, researchers will need to budget for CPP and EI contributions at the rate of 7.27% of anticipated annual salary up to a maximum contribution of $3795.31 per year. The University will provide funding for the employer portion of CPP and EI for the duration of any current employment contracts already in existence as of November 1, 2017.

Important: Employer contributions for Benefit and CPP/EI costs are to be calculted in addition to any salary amounts paid to a postdoctoral fellow. As a result, Faculty Supervisors should work with the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs to calculate the total costs for hiring a postdoctoral fellow in advance. For assistance, contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs for more details.
