Description:

The Life and Climate Award (LC Award) is the result of the creation of an endowment given to the University of Lethbridge. The annual allocation of funds is based upon the value of the endowment and will fluctuate based on these values.  For 2023-24, the total value is yet to be determined.  

The terms of the endowment are:

1. The LC Award will support the presentation of science-based information on the relation between Life and Climate to the academic community and the general public.
2. An application will not ordinarily exceed one page. 
3. This is a research trust fund for local lectures, presentations, and dissemination of research results in many forms (lectures, travel, hospitality related to dissemination of research, development of publications including pamphlets, books, or brochures) in the areas of life and climate.

Eligibility:

The LC Award is available to any member of the University of Lethbridge academic community including academic assistants, post-doctoral fellows, and students.   

Timeline:

• May-June: Launch of current competition.
• September 26, 2023: Next application deadline.
• October: Applications are reviewed.
• November-December: Funding decisions are communicated to the applicants.

How to Apply:

• The ORIS normally issues a call for proposals in May/June of each year.
• Submissions for the current round are due by 4:00 p.m. on September 26, 2023.  Late submissions will not be accepted and incomplete applications will be deemed ineligible.  An application consists of a webform found on the Research Services webpage and a one-page application attachment. 

Application Attachment Instructions:

The application should be clear and concise and justify the use of all funding.  It is the responsibility of the applicant(s) to adequately justify the expenditures included in the application.  Funds can be requested to support lectures, travel and hospitality, and publications related to the dissemination of research findings in the areas of life and climate. 

The application attachment must describe, in one page or less, the following:

1. A proposal consistent with the terms of the endowment.
2. A brief budget and budget justification including the total amount requested as well as other funds being contributed to the activities; and
3. A list of potential audience members (ie. conference attendees, readers of reports, etc).

For the attachment, use font size of 12 point, black type.  Maximum of six lines per inch. No condensed/narrow fonts, type, or spacing. Insert a margin of 2 cm (3/4 inch) - minimum - around the page.

Evaluation Process and Criteria:

The following priorities apply to all applicants:

• Grants are awarded on the basis of merit.
• Final funding decisions are made by the Life and Climate Committee made up of members of the SOURCE Reviewer Pool.
• The applications will be funded based on the ranking provided by the review committee.  
• Due to limits on funding availability, appeals will not be considered.  It is expected that the number of fundable applications will exceed the amount of available funds for each competition. 

Conditions of the Award:

1. Use of Funds: Expenditures may be made only for those cost elements identified in the application or as limited in the Request for New Fund form.
2. Term: The term of an award is for 24 months, in accordance with the applicant's request. 

Reports:

A final report of no more than one page on the work funded by the LC Award must be submitted within 30 days of the award end date.
