Strategic Innovation Fund Stream 4 Competition
Last week the government launched the inaugural competition of the Strategic Innovation Fund’s (SIF) ‘Stream 4’ initiative. This fund will be of interest to universities because of the inclusion of post-secondary institutions as key partners in the competition. The SIF was created in Budget 2017 as a $1.26-billion program designed to attract business investments by encouraging R&D to accelerate the technology transfer and commercialization of innovative products, processes and services.
The inaugural competition will focus on supporting R&D consortia and networks applying data capabilities in the health and biosciences sector.
This competition’s Letter of Intent phase is open from June 28, 2018 to August 31, 2018. Funding awarded through the program will be $10 million to $50 million per funded proposal/project.
SIF Stream 4 calls are expected to advance industrial research, development and technology demonstration through promoting collaboration between the private sector, researchers and non-profit organizations. For Stream 4 applications, leading applications must be considered either a consortium or a network:
· Networks must be led by a Canadian non-profit organization able to support industry-led R&D, mobilizing new technologies and innovations to the market, and the development of high-growth companies.
· Consortium are made up of Canadian universities, colleges, research institutes, businesses (including SMEs) and/or non-profit organizations from more than one sector across Canada. The consortium would be led by a large Canadian company with significant operations in Canada and experience in both undertaking large scale R&D projects and launching new products, with strong equity and diversity policies and practices.
More information on this program can be found on the SIF Stream 4 website.
Those invited to submit full applications are expected to do so before Fall 2018, with the final announcement of winners occurring prior to March 2019.
