The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is jointly administered by Canada’s three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the administering agency of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program and is responsible for the payment of awards in accordance with the policies and regulations outlined in the Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide.
Unique Application Requirements
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant’s individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career and the host institution’s commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated. As such, an applicant’s application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed supervisor and host institution.
Duration: Two years
Step 1: Expressions of Interest
Potential applicants who have identified a proposed Faculty Supervisor, and are interested in applying to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships competition, must submit an Expression of Interest via email to firstname.lastname@example.org as part of the internal selection process. The Internal Deadline for Expressions of Interest is July 2, 2019.
Expressions of Interest must include:
- 500 word (approximately) lay description of proposed research
- Self-declaration that the candidate meets the eligibility requirements
- Postdoctoral Fellows' CCV
- Faculty Supervisor's CCV
- Explanation of why the applicant would be competitive and merits a Banting award. In approximately 500 words, please demonstrate:
- the applicant’s research and leadership excellence
- the synergy between the applicant, their research, the supervisor and the institution
- how a Banting Fellowship (and this research opportunity) will enhance the applicant’s career trajectory
- Identify the relevant agency (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC)
- If you are unable to provide any of the above, please provide a detailed explanation*
Expressions of Interest will be evaluated on the synergy between the applicant, the supervisor and the research environment, quality of the proposed research program, and the research excellence and leadership in the research domain of both the applicant and supervisor.
You are encouraged to read all the information in the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships’ application guide prior to preparing an Expressions of Interest.
Step 2: Review of Letters of Intent and Selection of Applicants
Expressions of Interest submissions will be reviewed internally and selected candidates will be invited to move forward with a full Banting Fellowship application supported by the University of Lethbridge. Only invited applicants are required to complete the online application.
Step 3 - Application Reviews and Feedback
