The CCAC requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing be adequately trained in the principles of laboratory animal science, and the ethical issues involved in using animals. The CCAC also requires that all personnel listed on an animal use protocol have training before the research begins, and that the University of Lethbridge maintain records to document this training.
To register for the Institutional Animal User Training Program Part 1 training through the University of Western Ontario's WebCt based "Basic Animal Care and Use" course, contact Susan Entz. The course covers ethics, husbandry, research issues, and occupational health & safety.
To register for the Part 2A (Rat) or Part 2A (Mouse) animal handling courses, contact Dr. Isabelle Gauthier.
The University does not yet have formal animal handling courses for other species of animals. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator to ensure that their animal users receive the required training, and to submit documentation of this training to the Animal Welfare & Human Subject Research Coordinator using the Evidence of IAUTP Part 2 Training to Meet CCAC requirements form.doc.
