Fun with Math

Purpose

  • Respond to the strategic priorities to enhance learner pathways and reinforce the U of L quality brand while increasing engagement and community connections.
  • Respond to our commitment to learners, inspiration, and responsible action.
  • Support the learner experience as outlined in the Academic Plan.
  • Help learners prepare for their future and establish a relationship with the U of L.
  • Attract learners to participate in a lot of fun, but challenging, projects while undertaking their regular studies at their respective schools.
  • Expose smart and dedicated learners to the young and talented mathematics faculty - professors Abbas Momeni and Dr. Soroosh Yazdani.
  • Pilot project to run during the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters.

Outcomes of Success

  • Inspired learners.
  • Prepared learners for University.
  • Engaged learners to participate in national and international mathematics competitions.
  • Increased recruitment and retention.

Progress

  • Seed funding received from Strategic Enrolment Management Committee which in turn was leveraged for investment by the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) and the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS).
  • 10-15 learners from grades 7-12 participate weekly with a number of learners from grades 9-12 invited to participate in a one-day math competition April 13, 2013.
  • Annualized by the Mathematics Department.
