"Working in an Intercultural Workplace”    By Imarú Baquero

Universities are usually culturally diverse communities. The University of Lethbridge has an increasing international student population and this trend will continue. Many university employees have immigrated to Canada from varied countries. Cultural diversity can be a positive asset in the workplace. However, in many cases, we are not always sure how to interact most effectively with those whose values and behaviours differ from our own.

This interactive talk will explore some aspects of intercultural awareness and competency. It will be an opportunity for the audience to develop a new understanding of how to take advantage of the unique attributes of other cultures in the workplace and the classroom and develop relationships that are more productive.

About the presenter:

Imarú Baquero is the Manager, International Student Services in the International Office at the University of Lethbridge. Imarú combines her own first-hand experience of living and working in different cultures with her experience in the field of cultural awareness. She has personally relocated across cultures and has an empathetic appreciation for those living and working across cultures.

Venezuelan by birth, Ima moved to Lethbridge from Caracas in 2008. Before moving to Canada she had experience working in a multicultural setting at Procter and Gamble for five years. Ima has worked with international students for over six years, and during this time, she has completed training and professional development in the area of intercultural competency.
