Richard Guy and a Small Excursion into Graph Theory

Professor Peter Zvengrowski University of Calgary

Abstract

The first half of this talk will be about the main character in today’s meeting,

Richard K. Guy. This part of the talk will be somewhat biographical, and in addition to talking about his mathematical accomplishments we will talk about his passion for the mountains and other aspects of his life. Of course this will also include many things about his life’s companion Louise.

One of Richard’s favourite subjects in mathematics is combinatorics, in which graph theory plays a major role. In the second half of this talk we will therefore talk about certain theorems in graph theory that also involve topology, and as such are of particular interest to the speaker. This will include the Kneser Conjecture and its eventual solution, as well as a generalization of this to the Dol’nikov Theorem.

Pizza and refreshments will be served.
