Relationships: Research & Teaching

SEPT 27, 2018
3:30 pm | Andy’s Place

Dr. Erasmus Okine | Vice-President, Research
The Six-sector model in Alberta differentiates post-secondary institutions relative to their contributions to advanced education. The University of Lethbridge is one of the four grouped under the sector “Comprehensive Academic and Research Institutions.”   Work by many over the last 50 years has resulted in many achievements. In considering the next 50 years, how does the University of Lethbridge explore the relationships between teaching and research to excel as a comprehensive university, inspire, and support student potential? Indeed, how do we explore the relationships between research and teaching so that we fulfill the vision of becoming “Canada’s destination university for all those who seek a comprehensive, liberal-based education?”

Dr. Shelley Wismath | Dean of Liberal Education
While academics often talk about how to bring our research into our teaching and sometimes regard doing so as an indicator of good teaching, we don’t talk as much about the other direction, of how to bring our teaching into our research. This talk will discuss the research area known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), including what it is and why it matters, the stages of research-based teaching, and some examples from my own recent research work on the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
